Our architecture interacts with history and memory, welcoming diversity, and combines structural and construction systems to create spatial compositions that celebrate cultural hybridity and multiplicity in all its forms.
Our buildings present alternative construction models that are both bespoke and industrialized. We emphasize the poetics of assembly and the celebration of craftsmanship. The agency defines itself as an “Architectural Manufactory,” built upon a systemic approach that integrates architecture, engineering, construction, and advanced technology into a holistic design.
Architectural Manufactory
Our projects are grounded in contextual ecology, emphasizing material efficiency, local resources, and the exploration of innovative construction systems combined with traditional, and even vernacular, materials. The core of our architectural language lies in the fusion of technological innovation with artisanal craftsmanship, creating a poetic approach to assembly.
Mikoü Architectures is an international practice founded by award-winning architects Selma and Salwa Mikou, two French-Moroccan women architects, born in Fez, Morocco. Our office is a space dedicated to creativity and experimentation, exploring architecture and its various intersections.
Since its establishment in 2008 in Paris, Mikoü Architectures has explored the interactions between form, function, material, and construction, always in relation to the surrounding environment. For Salwa and Selma Mikou, each site is unique, prompting a specific sensory and aesthetic experience often tied to collective imagination. Their aim is to weave connections from the invisible layers that inhabit spaces—the unsaid, the already-existing, memory, and traces—elements that nourish their poetic approach and guide their architectural narratives.
Mikoü Architectures’ projects are designed to enhance social and human interactions, bringing to life dynamic architecture and spatial arrangements that encourage multiple uses. The two architects are especially drawn to the rituals embodied in the everyday experience of space, and their potential to activate new ways of living together and inspire fresh architectural forms.
For several years, Mikoü Architectures has been engaging in cross-disciplinary research, collaborating with engineers and industry experts to study the history of prototypes and pioneering architectural experiments, linked to the major industrial innovations of the 20th century. This research seeks to uncover the foundations of an ecological, low-carbon construction approach within the realms of prefabrication and assembly.
In a spirit of transdisciplinary creation, Mikoü Architectures merges technological innovation, biosourced materials, and artisanal craftsmanship to propose alternative construction models for hotel and wellness spa projects, residences and condominiums, workshops and factories, educational campuses, and cultural buildings.
Salwa and Selma Mikou are deeply engaged with contemporary vernacular architecture. They seamlessly blend diverse cultures and a combination of raw and refined materials, embodying their vision of an inclusive and multicultural modern city.
Salwa and Selma Mikou
Salwa and Selma Mikou are French-Moroccan architects born in Fez, Morocco. Graduates of the Paris Belleville School of Architecture, they founded Mikoü Architectures in 2008 after each gaining significant experience with international firms. Salwa worked with Jean Nouvel from 2000 to 2006, while Selma collaborated with Renzo Piano from 2002 to 2006, contributing to major projects in France and internationally.
Mikoü Architectures has quickly gained recognition for its expertise and creativity.
Their work has been celebrated with numerous distinctions and invitations to prestigious international competitions. In 2014, Salwa and Selma Mikou were selected to represent Morocco at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale, under the theme “Fundamentals,” curated by Rem Koolhaas. They have taught both in France and abroad, including at the Architectural Association in London from 2015 to 2018.
They are also members of the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA), Zurich section, and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Their work has been featured in various international publications such as Detail, Baunetz, AR, AA, Dezeen, and has been the subject of a monograph published by Swiss publisher Aedibus International – Quart Verlag.
In 2024, Arte TV featured a documentary on their work and architectural vision.
We operate in a workshop environment, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, graphic designers, scenographers, and urban planners, all from diverse cultural backgrounds.
